BAM Innovation is an innovation and business development consultancy. We support clients from industry, academia and the charitable sector in securing significant funding from sources including Innovate UK, UKRI, NIHR, ESA, and Horizon Europe.
We specialise in partnering with clients over the long term, acting as your outsourced innovation and bid writing department. We focus on providing end-to-end support across the innovation cycle, from mapping innovation opportunities, to connecting you with the right industry partners and academic expertise, to developing successful bids, to managing projects at every step of the way.
We work with an extensive network of academic and industry experts, and have a strong track record in consortia building to develop major projects addressing some of the biggest global challenges facing us in the 21st century.
Our clients cover sectors including medical and health technologies, diagnostics and therapeutics; electric vehicles; the future of flight; sustainable agriculture; international development; and digital and assistive technologies.
MEET THE TEAM
BAM's Directors
BAM's Directors, Ben Hutchinson and Matthew Young, have secured and managed more than £150m of research and innovation funding over the past 10 years. They are committed to making innovation happen, and work to connect innovative companies with the ideal industry and government partners and academic expertise to maximise chances of funding success and to enable significant real world impact.
Ben and Matthew are expert innovation advisors, and have supported start-up and scale-up companies from multiple sectors to secure funding and deliver innovative projects and technologies.
Ben Hutchinson: Ben has secured more than 300 grants for industry and University clients. Before setting up BAM, he spent 10 years in research development at the Universities of Durham and Bath, where he secured a number of transformative seven figure grants. He has deep expertise in health and medical applications, leading the development of medical devices for long-term conditions, and acting as a Research Committee member for the Bath Institute for Rheumatic Diseases and a Director of Bath Mind mental health charity. He has wider expertise in AI-based technologies, running a creative technologies SME, PinTale, which combines NLP and ML to create tools for authors. He is also an assessor for Innovate UK.
Matthew Young: has 10 years’ research development experience at UCL and the University of Bath. In one year at Bath he secured £9.8m of UKRI and NIHR grant income. Matthew is Link Director for the West of England Academic Health Science Network, an Expert Reviewer for Horizon Europe, and a member of the EPSRC Digital Economy Theme major hubs directors’ advisory group. Matthew is also Director of the Innovate UK funded Open Space Network.

BAM will act as your partner, working with you to plan your business development and funding strategies; identifying the perfect funding opportunities for you; utilising our networks to find the best collaborators and experts to strengthen your bids; leading on all bid writing; supporting interview processes; and helping you manage your project once it's funded. We secure more than 70% of the bids we submit.

BAM will lead on grant writing and consortia building. Using our expert approach to grant writing, we will work with you to articulate the challenge you are addressing and your proposed innovation; to define your project, work packages and risks; to explore the market you are entering and to develop your route-to-market and business plan; and to explore the added value funding will bring to you, UK Plc and beyond.
CRITICAL FRIEND
Adding value to your bids
BAM will support the grant writing process, providing expert advice and guidance; we will offer comments and edits on all sections of bids; and we will write the most complicated parts.
TRAINING
Developing your expertise
BAM offers virtual and in-person training and development workshops to companies, Universities and hospitals. We have led sessions on securing funding from Innovate UK and NIHR, and on writing your first fellowship application. We are happy to design bespoke training courses and workshops.
WORKING SPACE
Flexible and Innovative Working
Through our partners, Open Space Network (OSN), we can offer our clients co-working space in Warminster. OSN provides innovative and flexible work spaces in the heart of local towns, offering an alternative to working from home and regular commutes. OSN are launching a network of welcoming spaces, with a straight-forward usage-based model to ensure our centres will suit you, whatever your requirements.
